Escape the Rat Race
Alternatives to the conventional, 9 to 5 job

If you want to be a lawyer, paramedic, teacher, accountant, IT worker, secretary etc, there are countless courses, job advertisements, sources of information and opportunities available.

But what if a more idiosyncratic career would suit you better? What if your work style is more atypical? Would a quirky job be better for you?

What if you would prefer not to be tied to a desk? Do you yearn for a work/life balance that suits you better? Do you feel there must be a better way to make a living?

Not the 9 to 5 aims to be the answer, starting out as an information exchange and networking opportunity for people who are searching for ideas and resources about careers outside of the mainstream. Ultimately we hope to provide a source of routes to the jobs you would like.

The first set of information we have is a set of responses to questions about unusual jobs by people already taking an individual career path, the people who have the sorts of jobs you might like.

The usual routes for job hunters cater for those who are happy to work within their conventions, but it is not easy to find information about other jobs.
